Tübingen and Surroundings

The summer school will be held for the second time in Tübingen, a town with a historic city centre dating from 1500. Tübingen also hosts one of Germany’s oldest universities, and is the former residence of Kepler, Melanchthon, Hölderlin, Hegel, Hesse, and the current pope. The Max Planck campus is located on a hill overlooking the old town, and incorporates a common area and garden for informal interactions between speakers and students.

Tübingen

Where is it? Tübingen is located south of Stuttgart in Southern Germany. Here are some maps:

What is there to see? Some impressions of the historic centre. Close to Tübingen is also the monastery Bebenhausen and the Hohenzollern Castle.

The Max Planck Campus hosts the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory, and the Max Planck House (where the summer school will be located).

Maps of the campus are here:

How to reach the MPI campus

by car:
Motorway A81 Stuttgart - Singen: exit Rottenburg or Herrenberg or motorway 8 München - Karlsruhe: exit Stuttgart-Echterdingen; continue the journey on street B 27 to Tübingen; in Tübingen (see map of Tübingen) follow the white signs and drive north in the direction of the “Kunsthalle” (exhibition hall): then follow the detailed map to the MPI Campus.

by train:
Most trains come from Stuttgart main station. After arrival in Tübingen opposite to the main station (see Map of Tübingen downtown) you will find taxi or a bus.
Take the bus no. 3 until the “Sternwarte” stop; or bus no. 4 until the “Corrensstr.” Stop, and walk up the stairs.

by plane:
From Stuttgart Airport (map of region Tübingen), 30 min. by taxi. The simplest alternative is to take the “Airportsprinter” shuttle bus (no. 828) directly to Tübingen, from the front of terminal 1 (see j07.pdf">timetable here). A slower and more expensive alternative is to take the S2 or S3 local trains to Stuttgart Rohr, change to the S1 to Herrenberg, and continue from there by train to Tübingen.
